About Us

Founded in 2009, Space118 provided studios and residencies on a short-term basis to visual artists as part of its commitment to supporting emerging art practitioners from all parts of the country and the world. We are looking at a diverse group of artists working in the studios to create a lively, supportive and dynamic working environment. We aimed to foster the exchange of ideas and experiences amongst artists who work across different fields of art.

Located in the heart of industrial Bombay, in a warehousing compound, a 15 minute drive from Kala Ghoda and the art district in Colaba, artists had the freedom to experience the rich art and cultural scene on a daily basis. We encouraged artists to have the freedom to develop their work at their own pace and interpret the studio term from their own perspective.

Owing to the pandemic and keeping up with the changing times, we have now transitioned into a Grant-Making Organisation, still fervently motivated to provide opportunities for emerging artists! The Space118 Fine Arts Grant is a financial production grant given towards the realisation of an ongoing or a newly conceived project. The grant also entails online mentorship sessions with a senior artist and the freedom to exhibit their work through a Virtual Open Studio day. The recipients for the Space118 Fine Arts Grant- 2021 were chosen by an esteemed jury panel including Lekha Poddar- Collector, Mortimer Chatterjee- Gallerist and Curator, and Shilpa Gupta- Artist.  The recipients for the Space118 Fine Arts Grant- 2022 were  chosen by an esteemed jury panel including Lekha Poddar- Collector, Dr Arshiya Lokhandwala- Art Historian and Curator,  Neha Choksi- Artist and Space118.
