Chinmoyi Patel

Chinmoyi Patel (b. 1985, Vadodara, Gujarat, India) graduated with a BFA(Painting), Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda (2006) and MFA (Art Practice), Goldsmiths, London (2009).

She also studied at the School of Visual Arts, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore, Pakistan (2006-07). Her exhibitions include India Art Fair (2020), Sakshi Gallery; TAPI Utsav, Surat (2020); Celebrating 10 years of Space 118, Sakshi Gallery (2019); Site Art Space, Baroda (2019); Ipswich Biennial, UK (2018); Conflictorium, Ahmedabad (2018); Swiss Cottage Gallery, London (2017); Yangpyeong Museum, South Korea (2017); Chatterjee & Lal (2015); Rencontres Internationales, Haus Der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin/Gaite Lyrique, Paris/Center Pompidou, Paris. Other residencies include Space 118, Mumbai (2015); Changdong Art Studio, Seoul (2011); Green Papaya Art Projects, Manila (2011). Chinmoyi was a Finalist for the Celeste Art Prize 2011 and received the Madanjeet Singh Scholarship for a residency at BNU, Lahore. She has taught part-time at the Department of Fine Arts, South Gujarat University, Surat (2012-2018), and been an External Juror at the Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU, Baroda (2017-19).

Chinmoyi works primarily with sculptural and video installations. Her work uses various forms of play, humor, appropriation, and collaborations to present personal stories, memories, histories, and experiences of the changing rhythms of urban life. She is interested in the shifts and ruptures caused by rapid urbanisation and development, which bring a sense of displacement, and how they exist within a larger social and cultural framework.

Chinmoyi lives and works between Fiji and India.
