We are conducting an “Obvara Pottery Workshop” by Hanif Galwani on April 25th (Saturday) and May 2nd (Saturday) from 11 am to 6 pm at Space 118.

Here are a few details on the workshop that you might find useful:

ABOUT HANIF GALWANI: Hanif hails from a traditional potter’s family. He grew up watching his father and elder brothers work with clay. Years later, Hanif went on to study at Golden Bridge Pottery, where he apprenticed under Rey Meeker and Deborah Smith in 2007. After training there for seven months, he opened his own studio at Kumbharwada in Dharavi, Mumbai. Hanif primarily works with stoneware and terracotta to make tableware and lifestyle products.

Day 1: April 25

On the first day, students will be given an introduction to the Obvara technique, a centuries’ old method of making pottery that involves scalding the finish on the pottery to seal the porous surface. The earthenware is heated to temperatures almost as high as 900°C and then dipped into a yeast mixture before being dunked in water to rapidly cool the piece. Hanif will then teach basic wheel work, as well as how to make coil pots and pinch pots. Each student will make four articles: Two handmade pots and two wheel pots.

Day 2: May 2

On this day, the clay articles will be fired. Participants will also learn what goes into the making of the Obvara mixture and how to handle the pottery to produce stunning pieces ranging from off-white to almost black.
