THE LOFT
Mumbai, Maharashtra – 2008:
Started in 2008, by art consultant, arts manager and author, Anupa Mehta, THE LOFT at Lower Parel, was an arts project space, which doubled up as a studio gallery and a source for exciting art acquisitions. It was set up to support young and mid-career artists.
Over 2008-2018, this alternate arts space conducted international residencies and studio shows for Indian artists, besides inviting well known curators to present an exhibition/project based on ongoing concerns. A panel comprising eminent collectors, established artists, and critic-curators was appointed to recommend artists and curators for THE LOFT’s annual programme.
The nominations for 2009-2010 were made by Anupam Poddar, Sangita Jindal, Jitish Kallat, Sudarshan Shetty, Priya Pall and Mehta. Applications for 2010-2011 were appraised by a six person panel including Amrita Jhaveri, Girish Shahane, Harsh Goenka, Shaheen Merali, Swapan Seth along with Mehta. Among many artists who benefitted are Mahbabur Rahman from Bangladesh, Zenita Katz from Austria, Mayura Subehdar from Amsterdam and London-based Turkish artist, Güler Ates.
From 2013-2018, THE LOFT at Lower Parel presented curated exhibitions by emerging and mid-career artists. In 2018, the space finally morphed into Anupa Mehta Arts & Advisory. The eponymous arts consulting firm pnow rovides strategic inputs to a range of arts projects requiring support vis-à-vis programming, marketing and fund-raising, as well as collection building services.
