She has been participating in group exhibitions like the ‘ Lokame Tharavadu’ (The world is one family) curated by Bose Krishnamachari (2021), the Nasreen Mohamedi Scholarship Award exhibition, MSU Fine Arts, Baroda (2017, 2019) and the Abir First Take exhibition, at the L & P Hutheesing Visual Art Centre, Ahmedabad (2018). She is currently living and continuing her studio practice in Kannur, Kerala.
Neelima’s works depict figures in a specific context, including objects that have associations with the context, but not with the time and vice versa. She treats her figures as presences, where each figure demands its own space and the figures form a relation between those different spaces and with each other, creating a structure that holds them all together. Along with the figuration, her application of nature is frequently allegorical in emotional, sexual, and cultural terms; it is a critical device in her visual language.
In her recent works, she is deeply memorizing her grandfather, fascinated with his body features and as well as the stories that he would narrate regarding his physical appearance. It is from these stories that the woodpecker appears alongside the figures in the paintings. Sometimes, Neelima herself appears as a woodpecker in the visuals. She also depicts images from her childhood memories; nightmares and reminiscences of events that left a deep impact on her and these visuals also serve as a rich source of metaphor to express love and affection. Sometimes it also becomes a source of portraying a beloved’s presence.
